PRACTICAL GUIDE / VIDEO & VOICE

ElevenLabs vs Synthesia: voiceover or AI presenter?

Start with what your audience needs to see. Narration can explain the footage you already have. A presenter can introduce an idea when there is less to show.

Choose the format before the subscription

Consider ElevenLabs for narration when you already have a screen recording, product footage or slides and want spoken audio to accompany them. Its text-to-speech tools turn a script into audio with a choice of voices. See the official text-to-speech documentation.

Consider Synthesia for a presenter-led explanation when an on-screen avatar would help introduce a process, lesson or update. Synthesia offers avatars driven by a script. See its official avatar overview.

Our recommendation is about the format, not which provider sounds more natural or performs better. We have not run a controlled comparison. For a one-off message, your own voice or a simple captioned screen recording may be sufficient.

These are suggested production approaches, not claims that either product is limited to one format. Check the exact features and export options included in your chosen plan.

One business brief, two possible formats

Fictional example: Harbour Repairs wants to explain how customers request an appointment. They choose a preferred day, describe the fault and receive an email confirming availability. Sending a request does not confirm a booking.

Need to arrange a repair? Choose the day you would prefer and tell us what has gone wrong. We will check availability and email you to confirm. Your request is not a confirmed booking.

Narration version: Record the real booking form with dummy details. Match each sentence to the relevant field or confirmation message. This is our suggested route if customers need help completing the form.

Presenter version: Use an avatar for the opening explanation, then show the relevant booking steps. Keep the booking condition on screen as well as in the script. This may suit an introduction, but the presenter should not hide the process viewers need to follow.

The script is an editorial example, not output generated by either product. Neither approach should invent a price, availability promise or customer testimonial.

Run a small test before committing

  1. Choose one real task. Define the audience, the message and the next action. Keep confidential or customer information out of your sample.
  2. Prepare the same short script. Include a business name, an important condition and a number if relevant. Use only facts you can verify.
  3. Try the format you actually need. Review a short sample before generating a complete piece. Check available trial or free-plan limits first.
  4. Ask someone to explain the message back. Note misunderstood words or unclear steps. This is more useful than judging only how polished the result looks.
  5. Count the full effort. Include drafting, generation, corrections, visual editing, captions and final review. Revisions may consume allowances.

Check the plan against the finished job

Look at generation allowances, export options, renewal terms and rights for your intended use. We do not quote a monthly price here because billing periods and plan details can change. Compare the providers’ current ElevenLabs pricing and Synthesia pricing before paying.

ElevenLabs states that its free plan does not permit commercial use. Paid-plan commercial use is conditional on its terms and necessary rights, with Beta Services excluded. Upgrading later does not automatically license audio generated on a free plan. Read its commercial-use guidance. For Synthesia, check the terms for the avatar, assets and intended distribution in your chosen plan.

Use only voices, likenesses and materials you have permission to use. An AI presenter should not imply that a real person endorses your business. Review the final words and captions before publishing.
